What is a phobia?
A phobia is, simply put, an extreme response to a situation or stimulus. Usually a phobia is a self defence mechanism gone mad. So, for example, spiders are all frightening because one caught you by surprise when you were young. This is your bodies natural defence to a stressful situation.
The problem is that your mind is unable to distinguish between a small tiny spider that represents no threat and the big highly venomous sort that pose a real risk to life, (even though you are unlikely to see one in your lifetime). You see a spider then you react, without ever having to consciously think about. The subconscious takes over and the panic sets in. BANG one spider phobia

How NLP can break a phobic response ?
Unlike a lot of phobia cures NLP does not rely upon exposing you to your fear. There is a method of phobia curing that involves repeating exposure to something you fear until your subconscious mind just gives up screaming against it. This is called flooding and can be a highly stressful way to break a phobia. So for example if you were afraid of heights other methods would have standing on a cliff edge till you were a gibbering wreck, then when you cant take any more, shove you back for more.
THIS IS NOT HOW THINGS ARE DONE IN NLP
After all, if you have experienced something unpleasant once or more, why should you have to live it all over again. In NLP, we use the Fast Phobia Cure which works by changing the way your brain associates with your phobia. Most people will never experience the phobia again. The technique itself does not require you to be exposed to your fear and is actually kind of fun.
Most simple phobias can be broken in just one session of up to an hour in length. However, some phobias are a bit more involved and require a longer session of up to three hours. The reason for this is that some phobias are actually several phobias stacked into one panic response. For example a fear of flying could be a fear or falling, a fear of lack of control, a fear of terrorism, a fear of mechanical failure and a fear of death; all wrapped up in one fear called a fear of flying. In cases like this it is necessary to break the fears down and do the phobia cure on each of the parts. Whereas a fear of snakes is simple fear of being injure or killed by a snake and only needs one phobia to be cured.
